“… Central to this success was the work of a conductor as assured in his artistic vision as the Caracas-born Christian Vásquez”
A prominent member of the brilliant generation of musicians emerging from the prodigious ‘El Sistema’—the orchestral network founded in 1975 by José Antonio Abreu in the land of Teresa Carreño and Gustavo Dudamel—Vásquez commanded the podium with precise gestures. He articulated and phrased the Orientalist nuances of Scheherazade with crystalline clarity, weaving a sinuous narrative of transparent textures that allowed the soloists to soar without compromising the symphonic vigor and sumptuous nature of the original orchestration.
It was a substantial reading, rich in nuance and color—scrupulously faithful to the score and expertly balanced in its shading. Sinbad’s Ship, the Tale of Prince Kalender, the Young Prince and the Princess, the Festival in Baghdad, the Shipwreck … all were brought to life with plasticity and imaginative flair, free of overstatement, by Vásquez’s steady baton and the committed musicians of the Symphony Orchestra of the Region of Murcia.

“There is nothing more to say about such musical mastery than the highest rating”
Venezuelan conductor Christian Vásquez inspired the Tampere Philharmonic to achieve a sublime sound.
Vásquez established a direct, encouraging and inspiring connection with the orchestra — a collaboration that could well continue.
The orchestra performed with exceptional passion and brilliance, sounding unified, free and courageous.
The climax came with Arturo Márquez’s Danzón No. 8, a fascinating performance that led both orchestra and audience into a true state of ecstasy.

“Christian Vásquez offered unequivocal evidence of his finest qualities, conducting this symphonic behemoth from memory”
The result of this “sojourn” is 22 uninterrupted minutes of music intended to be experienced as a single, continuous breath; a work that ensnares the listener within the myriad “embryos” that germinate and develop the score’s voluminous thematic material. Áurea is a fresh and delectable work, yet it reaches far beyond such simple charms.
The second half centered on a performance of Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique that was meticulously narrated and articulated….A blended and polished rendition, virtually seamless, in which Maestro Christian Vásquez—who conducted this symphonic behemoth from memory—offered unequivocal evidence of his finest qualities. This performance was light years beyond the one heard from the same orchestra in April 2024, then under the baton of the Swiss conductor Baldur Brönnimann. Applause and cries of “bravo” resounded throughout.

“Among the torrent of virtuoso instrumentalists emerging from El Sistema, double bassist Edicson Ruiz stands as one of its most illustrious figures… joined by the Orquesta de la Comunidad de Madrid under the baton of another pillar of Venezuelan musical excellence, his compatriot Christian Vásquez”
The triumph following the final joropo—bolstered by the outstanding accompaniment of a deeply committed ORCAM, led by Vásquez with precision, idiomatic flair, and evocative color—was, in the words of the critics of old, ‘resounding.’ This success reached even greater heights during the encores. Though there were three, the sheer enthusiasm of the audience suggested there could have been three hundred.
In the second half, Vásquez and the Madrid musicians delved into the romantic thunder and voluptuousness of Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony. This was a reading stripped of sugary sentimentality, favoring vivid, precise tempos and emphasized dynamic extremes, yet delivered with lyrical effusion in the melodic episodes, particularly the ‘Andantino in modo di canzona.’ The conductor’s precise pulse and gesture masterfully navigated the ‘obstinate’ pizzicati of the third movement and the unreserved brilliance of the fiery final Allegro.

“A trip to Latino rhythm’s ecstasy”
Pacho Flores and Tampere Philharmonic world premiere of Tuomas Turriago trumpet concerto presented a new orchestral work of major significance.
The Tampere-based composer took the audience on a trip to latin rhythmic extasy – The trumpet soloist brilliantly shined and spoke with his instrument.
The huge applause was well deserved: A new Finnish major orchestral composer emerged at this week Friday Tampere Philharmonic’s when Tuomas Turriago Trumpet Concerto literally avalanched in all its plenitude into its first performance.
Christian Vásquez is an expert and accurate-handed conductor, who controls the orchestra with musical purpose. In some details the balance could have been a little bit more precise, but that is only a very small detail in a wholly brilliant and passionate performance from the conductor.

“Christian Vásquez and the orchestra were in perfect communion with the soloist and displayed a great mastery of the intricate orchestral score”
Christian Vásquez, with his vivid and effusive gestures, proved to be a splendid and fiery conductor; his magnificent layering of sound and pursuit of instrumental quality at times recalled the manner of a George Szell.
Supported by an orchestral performance of the highest caliber, Vásquez delivered an interpretation that magnificently highlighted the rhythmic and brilliant aspects while remaining attentive to the melodic and more somber passages; such as the beginning of the second movement, which featured particularly meticulous balance and an excellent horn solo. The third movement was especially captivating, with the conductor emphasizing the waltz rhythm through deeply personal accents and revealing fascinating details within the orchestration. The structural build-up and climaxes of the first and fourth movements were also highly effective, culminating in final minutes brimming with emotion and grit.
It was an evening to savor, with the first half featuring one of today’s most renowned trumpeters in performances that could hardly be bettered (including a world premiere); this was followed by a highly satisfying rendition of Tchaikovsky’s Fifth, revealing a truly admirable conductor.
