The Venezuelan maestro is the music director of the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra since August 2013. His four-year tenure has already been extended to lead the orchestra until 2019. The 2015/16 season saw him become the Principal Guest Conductor of the Het Gelders Orkest, starting his tenure with a tour of the Netherlands.
The current season 2018 began with the Vasquez’s return to the National Opera Denmark leading the great New Year Concert with the Royal Orchestra of Denmark. He also made his debut with de Norwegian Radio Orchestra . In February, he led a European Tour with the Arnhem Philharmonic.
His upcoming commitments include performances with the RTE National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland and the Harmony Festival Orchestra in Italy, in addition to his regular schedule with the Stavanger Symphony and the Arnhem Philharmonic.
In 2008, Vásquez conducted the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. In 2009, he made his debut with the Gävle Symphony Orchestra and this led to his appointment as its principal guest conductor for the 2012-2013 season.
Highlights of 2010 and 2011 include appearances with the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, the German Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, the Russian State Symphony Orchestra, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the National Arts Centre Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic; the latter during his participation in the Dudamel Fellowship programme.
During the 2012-2013 season, Vásquez made his debut with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and the Camerata Salzburg, with which he embarked on a tour that included concerts at the Grosses Festspielhaus in Salzburg, the Konzerthaus in Vienna, the Alte Oper Frankfurt and the Berliner Philharmonie.
That same season, he led the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra and the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, and performed as principal conductor of the Teresa Carreño Orchestra of Venezuela (TCYOV) in Toulouse, Hamburg and Stavanger.
The 2014-2015 season saw his debut with the Norwegian National Opera Orchestra, the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra of Mexico, the Basel Symphony Orchestra and the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra. That season’s conducting appointments also included appearances with the Seongnam Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as the 2015 New Year’s Eve gala concert with the Royal Danish Orchestra.
In 2014, he guest conducted the Berlin Konzerthausorchester, the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Bilkent Symphony Orchestra, the Arnhem Philharmonic Orchestra and the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra. His performances with the TCYOV in Stockholm, Lisbon, Toulouse, London and Istanbul won him high praises. They also performed in Milan at Teatro alla Scala and toured Asia in 2015. In 2016 Vásquez led a tour of Europe which saw them perform in London, Lisbon, Toulouse, Munich, Stockholm and Istanbul.
Vásquez —who began to study violin at the age of eight in San Sebastián de los Reyes, state of Aragua— started his conducting studies in 2006, under the guidance of maestro José Antonio Abreu, and was appointed as music director of the Teresa Carreño Symphony Orchestra soon after.
